How to take care of stitches/sutures?

Suture-image1_large

2 days ago, my back head got stitched and now I’m searching on how to take care of it. So, here some information:

Keep the stitches dry and clean. Keep an eye on the wound to prevent it from any infection.

Protect the stitches

Avoid any contact sports like football or hockey. For children, it is advisable to avoid PE at school and don’t let them play with water, mud, sand and paint.

Have a bath/shower after surgery

Try to keep your stitches dry for at least 48 hours after surgery. After this time, you can get it wet briefly with a light spray but they shouldn’t be soaked. There’s a risk that the wound might pull apart if it gets too wet.

Avoid getting your dressing wet.

Infection

Please get your doctor if any of these symptoms happen:

  • swelling
  • increasing pain even though you are using painkillers
  • redness
  • unpleasant smell from the wound
  • fever
  • pus or bleeding from the wound
  • the wound feeling warm
