AKB48’s Kashiwagi Yuki (Yukirin) said, “Love-ban law is necessary as long as we’re an idol.”

If we get into a relationship, I wonder if fans sentiment to support members will fade.

Relationship, private life, and freedom. I gave up these kind of things because I devote myself to AKB48, because I have hope and dreams that I want to accomplish.

After giving it a lot of thoughts, goings through a lot of different thoughts, I’ve now reached the idea that idols are those who always put their fans first, thinking what they can do in order to please fans.”

First of all, I am a fan of idol group, AKB48 but I am no delusional fan like some people do. This is my own opinion and I see this topic from idol‘s perspective.

Honestly, I agree with her statement. Some people said, she’s been brainwashed and it’s normal for an idol to date someone. IMO, you can date someone you like because it is natural for human to fall in love and be in relationship. Same goes to idol because they are human too. I personally don’t care if an idol is dating someone.

But in this case, you need to know their culture and the concept of idol in Japan. The no-dating rule is not a new thing for an idol in Japan. I agree with Yukirin’s statement because she speaks as an idol. We know that Yukirin always want to be a truly idol and it’s not surprising if her statement is like that.

Firstly, you need to know what is an idol means in Japan.

In Japanese culture, idols are media personalities in their teens and early twenties who are considered particularly attractive or cute and who will, for a period ranging from several months to a few years, regularly appear in the mass media, e.g. as singers for pop groups, bit-part actors, TV personalities, models in photo spreads published in magazines, advertisements, etc. But not every young celebrity is considered an idol. Besides being cute, idols present an image of purity, as defined by Japanese culture. Among other things, this means that idols must not have boyfriends or girlfriends and must appear to be entirely inexperienced romantically and sexually. Occasionally, a Japanese publication will publish an expose in which an idol is revealed to have a romantic partner, usually accompanied by grainy pictures of the idol kissing or holding hands with the partner. If the idol’s agency cannot plausibly deny the allegation or explain away the evidence, the idol’s career is badly damaged and sometimes comes to a quick end. “

If you are an idol, this rule is the most basic thing you need to know and follow. Even though the rule is ridiculous, it still a rule and you have to follow it because it shows that you are professional and dedicated towards the job. Just like other professions, there are borders you cannot across.

As a normal human being, you might fall in love with someone. Liking someone, it’s not a mistake even for an idol. The mistake is when you get carried with your feelings and be in a relationship. I can see why this rule is implied for idols. Fans are the first thing for an idol. You have to make them happy, cheer up for them and be nice to them. Everything you do, you need to consider your fans feeling.

But when you are in a relationship, you have a lot of things to consider. Your commitment will increase and it might affect your performance. When you have problems with your partner, there’ll be times you cannot focus and do your job in a proper way. If you are caught in inappropriate manner with your dating partner, it’ll affect you image as an idol. You might hurt your fans as well. Then, how can you be an idol?

However, an idol is still a human. Someday, they have to choose their path for their own happiness. There are many idols that already married. They can have a normal life when they retired from the group or being a full-fledged actress/actor/singer.

But for a time being, when you still an idol and in a group, the words ‘love’ and ‘relationship’ are taboo and you have to keep yourself from these words.
